Season Officially Begins

The alumni-associated league of Mengonians is to take center stage on 31st July 2022. The prestigious tournament did not take place earlier last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and government restrictions on public gatherings. 

“This season we hope to come in bigger and more engaging in a wider aspect of getting all Mengonians and well-wishers at home (Mengo Senior School) together to have fun and social connections.” Said Sekalye David, the Chairperson of the MEL Committee. 

With more backing from the school and Mengo Old Students Association, MOSA, the committee launched a comeback of the Mengo Elite League for its second season. The return of the league has been well received by fellow alumni from different generations all planning to make an appearance this season. 

The MEL committee has an expectation of 14 teams this time round, however, they believe they shall surpass the target given the number of requests received in regard to participation in the league. 

“We are working harder to make this particular season a success, bringing on board more sponsors and improving our marketing structures is an object we ought not to miss.” Says Mr. Jeremiah Mugerwa, the President of MOSA. 

The MEL league’s second season will be held at Mengo Senior School, the home of the league. 

Out for Fresh Blood 

The MEL Season One Champions, DH Expendables are all out on the attack. The question is can they defend their title? This week, the champions lay out a foundation for the next chapter of the MEL Season, as they hope to step beyond just winning but conquering the league. 

The team captain Christopher Nakabaale, feels his teammates are 100 percent physically and mentally fit to cause havoc come the weekend. DH Expendables finished top of the league last season without breaking a sweat, demolishing every team that came their way, this time, they hope to create a stampede and keep the league trophy in the “DH”. 

The MESS boys from Mengo have not made any new transfer purchases this season, the captain believes the current squad has got what it takes to bring the title back to the “DH”. 

They are a team not to miss this weekend 

A Slaughter Weekend 

New entrants, Galacticos were tipped to be title favorites this season, however, DH Expendables proved a point that they remain league champions despite the attacking force of the new celebrated youngsters. 

DH Expendables battered Opobo FC 4-0 on Sunday at the Mengo Senior School Stadium (A), with goals from Nakabaale, Babylov, Kayemba and an own goal from the opposition, after seeing an intense fixture between Kentusi 2006 and Galacticos which ended 6-4 in favour of the new-bees. 

The youngsters caused havoc within the Kentusi 2006 defense with their marksmen Mark and Riyad both scoring braces to secure 3 points in a comfortable win. 

The former champions go to the top of the log as the newcomers come in 3rd place after Team Bakka was awarded 3 points because their opponents, Team Baddo failed to honor the fixture. The remainder of the teams played out to a draw, Higi Haga 1-1 One Touch FC and Team JFK and Class of 2018 both took home a point a piece after a 2-2 draw. 

Opobo FC’s Spokesperson said the team was working on a comeback after this heavy defeat, come the next outing.
